Abstract

This study developed and evaluated an automated trash bin designed to improve sanitation and waste disposal practices through sensor-based technology. Specifically, it assessed the functionality of the automated lid operation using ultrasonic sensing technology, the waste segregation system, the disinfectant spray mechanism for odor reduction, and the smartphone-based notification system that alerted users when the bin reached full capacity. A descriptive-developmental research design was employed, with teachers and staff of B.A. Calamba National High School in Pangao-an, Magpet, Cotabato serving as the respondents. The functionality of the system was tested through ten experimental trials, while user acceptability was evaluated in terms of design, convenience, and safety. Results indicated that most system features operated consistently and were rated as highly workable. Although minor inconsistencies were observed in the waste segregation sensor, suggesting the need for further calibration and refinement, the overall performance of the automated trash bin remained reliable and functional. Furthermore, respondents rated the innovation as highly acceptable across all evaluation criteria, demonstrating its effectiveness, safety, and user-friendliness. The study concluded that the automated trash bin provided a practical and innovative solution for enhancing sanitation, promoting proper waste management practices, and supporting public health and environmental cleanliness. It recommended further improvement of the waste segregation sensor to optimize system performance and encouraged future studies to integrate additional smart technologies that could enhance the efficiency and sustainability of automated waste management systems.
