Evaluating the Effects of Modernization on Karatig Jeepney in the City of Malolos, Bulacan

Abstract

This study examines the implications of modernization on the KaRaTig Jeepney in Malolos, Bulacan, emphasizing the balance between technological advancement and cultural preservation. The Philippine government’s modernization program for public utility vehicles aims to improve environmental sustainability, passenger safety, and transportation efficiency; however, it also threatens the continued operation of traditional jeepneys, which serve as both a major mode of transportation and a cultural symbol in Filipino communities. While numerous studies have explored jeepney modernization, limited research has focused specifically on the KaRaTig Jeepney in Malolos, Bulacan. Using a descriptive qualitative research design, the study gathered data through interviews with seven drivers and six commuters to understand their experiences and perceptions regarding modernization. The findings revealed both positive and negative views toward the modernization program. Participants recognized the environmental benefits, improved safety, and enhanced comfort offered by modernized vehicles, yet they also expressed concerns about increased transportation fares, possible loss of livelihood among drivers, reduced accessibility for commuters, and the gradual disappearance of the KaRaTig Jeepney as part of the community’s cultural identity. The study concludes that modernization efforts should not only prioritize technological progress but also consider the social, economic, and cultural realities of the people affected. Recommendations are therefore provided to support sustainable transportation development while preserving the heritage and cultural significance of the KaRaTig Jeepney in Malolos, Bulacan.
